What does “الشلّة” (al-shilla) mean in Arabic?
Arabic has أصدقاء for friends, but الشلّة (al-shilla) is something closer: the specific crew you do everything with — argue about football, plan a شاورما night, roast each other mercilessly. It’s warm, exclusive, and untranslatable as a single English word. “Squad” and “crew” come close, but neither carries the sense of a tight, recurring social unit the way الشلّة does in Levantine daily speech.
In the clip, a group of friends debate their World Cup picks — Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Algeria — and someone brings up a shawarma party video that nobody showed up to. That banter, the teasing, the shared investment in each other’s minor disasters: that’s exactly what a شلّة is. The word itself (root: ش-ل-ل, shilla) appears across the Arab world — Egypt and the Gulf use it too — but it has particular warmth in Levantine speech, where it describes a close-knit social circle with an almost familial loyalty. The plural is شِلَل (shilal).
