What does “الغش” (al-ghash) mean in Arabic?
الغش (al-ghash) is the standard Arabic word for cheating and deception across all dialects and registers. Its three-letter root غ-ش-ش carries a core sense of mixing bad with good — concealing something false under a truthful surface. That makes it equally at home describing exam cheating, adulterated food, and business fraud. Wherever Arabic is spoken, الغش names the act of deliberately misleading someone for personal gain.
The verb form يغش (yaghushshu, “he cheats”) appears directly in the clip when a student tries to copy from a phone hidden under his leg. The most vivid moment comes when another student has written his answers on a cold-drink bottle — “كان كاتب الغش على زجاجة” — only to find the teacher already holding it. Classically, scholars noted that غش causes “blackness of the heart,” which is why the word also carries connotations of malice and enmity beyond simple dishonesty. The related hadith “من غش فليس منا” (“whoever cheats is not one of us”) shows how deep the moral weight of this single word runs in Arabic-speaking culture.
