What does “mom shamed” mean in English?

mom shamed
modern parenting culture · informal / social media
Criticised in public for the way you raise your kids — part of the growing “-shame” family (body-shame, fat-shame).

To be “mom shamed” means someone has called you out in public for how you raise your kids. “Shame” has been a verb for a long time, but English speakers now attach it to many nouns: mom-shame, body-shame, fat-shame. Each one is a way of criticising someone for one personal thing. It happens a lot on social media, where strangers feel free to tell you what you are doing wrong as a parent.

In the clip, podcast host Amanda Hirsch says: “Nobody wants to be judged. People are afraid to post certain things because they could be mom shamed. I’ve never felt mom shamed in my whole time as a person on the Internet.” She means no one has ever attacked her online for her parenting choices — and she finds that unusual. The “-shame” pattern works the same way across many compounds. Take a noun, add “shame” or “shamed,” and you get a new verb. “Body-shamed” means someone criticised your body or appearance. “Fat-shamed” means someone was criticised for their weight. The core idea is always the same: someone made you feel bad about a personal choice, usually in public. The word is informal and tied to social media. You will see it in news articles, comment sections, and everyday conversation. It is most common in American English, but British and Australian speakers use it too. In more formal writing, you might say “openly criticised for the way she raises her kids” instead.
