I usually tell my students to start by asking themselves a few simple questions. The answers matter more than your level.

Start with what genuinely interests you

Motivation and interest are often more important than your language level. When a topic pulls you in, you will happily watch the same video several times, look up new words, and put up with not understanding everything.

My husband, for example, watches football with Spanish commentary and even comments on the game himself, repeating phrases he hears, even when he does not always know what they mean.

The same thing works for almost any interest. Do you like cooking? Watch cooking shows. Into makeup and cosmetics? Look for tutorials by Russian-speaking bloggers. Love travelling? Find travel programmes or vloggers and try different channels until you land on someone whose style you enjoy.

It is better to watch a hard video about something you love than an easy one about a topic that leaves you cold.

Know why you are watching

The second question is: what is your purpose?

Some learners are structured and goal-driven. They value clear stages, study guides and exam requirements. If that is you, let the goal decide the material.

Videos made specifically for learners of Russian as a foreign language often suit these students best. The vocabulary is already graded by level, and the topics usually line up with what comes up in exams. Many of them are the audio and video materials that go with textbooks.

Learners like this tend to know themselves well, and their goals are often specific: better listening, more confident speaking, or a deeper feel for Russian culture.

• To improve listening, interviews, vlogs, podcasts and almost any short videos work well.
• To learn to speak, choose material full of everyday dialogue, like TV series and films.
• To understand the culture, feature films, documentaries and programmes about life in Russia are a great choice.

If you just want to enjoy yourself

If your goal is simply to relax and watch films in Russian, do not go hunting for "the perfect film for A2." Pick a genre you love instead: comedy, detective stories, science fiction, or melodrama. The best choice is always something you actually want to watch to the end.

Your level does matter, of course, but it should not be the first thing you think about. Subtitles help beginners, and anything difficult can be watched more than once. You really do not need to catch every single word.

A note for beginners

For my beginner students I made a separate series of lessons that use shadowing: after each phrase there is a pause so you can repeat it out loud. That way you practise all the vocabulary from the official Russian as a foreign language curriculum. This is proper structured learning, with assessment and progress checks, so it leans more academic and is built for the classroom.

With adults I also like Давайте познакомимся (Let's Get Acquainted), an old Russian-language TV course. Yes, it is dated, but the way the characters speak and the acting are excellent.

The short version

Do not search for "the perfect film for A1." First find a topic that genuinely interests you. Then decide why you want to watch. Only after that think about how hard the language is. That order keeps you motivated, and it makes learning Russian far more enjoyable.
