What does “hacerle al cuento” mean in Mexican Spanish?

“Hacerle al cuento” is a Mexican idiom for spinning a tale, padding things out, or stalling instead of getting to the point. The pattern “hacerle a + noun” is very Mexican: you “le haces al” whatever role you are play-acting — “no le hagas al tonto” (don’t play dumb), “le hace al importante” (he acts like a big shot). With “cuento” (story/tale) it means cut the storytelling and act.

Here someone caught with a bogus document is told “ya, no le hagas al cuento” — enough with the act, you don’t represent anyone. Note the impersonal “le,” which doesn’t refer to a person; it is fixed in this construction, the same “le” you hear in “órale,” “ándale” and “híjole.” Standard equivalents would be “no te hagas el desentendido” or simply “déjate de cuentos.”
