What is a “chilindrina” in Mexico?

A chilindrina is a Mexican pan dulce whose crust is speckled with crumbs of burnt sugar — and that’s exactly why television’s most famous freckled girl is called La Chilindrina: her pecas (freckles) look like the sugar specks on the bread. It’s a very Mexican naming move — affectionate nicknames drawn straight from the bakery shelf.

The El Chavo scene explains the joke itself: “Chilindrina, de esos panes salpicaditos de azúcar... me dicen Chilindrina nada más porque tiene pecas” — bread sprinkled with sugar, girl sprinkled with freckles.
