💡 Víš, že…?

What does “se me chispotió” mean in Spanish?

se me chispotió
Mexican catchphrase
“It slipped out” — the “oops, I said the quiet part out loud” line.

Se me chispotió is the Mexican way to say something escaped your mouth that you never meant to say. It’s the verbal equivalent of clapping your hand over your mouth a half-second too late — the secret’s already out. The verb chispotear barely exists outside this phrase: it became household vocabulary entirely because El Chavo del 8 said it every time he blurted a secret by accident.

The construction uses the “accidental se”: se me chispotió literally frames it as the words slipping out on you, not something you did on purpose — the same grammar as se me cayó (“it fell on me / I dropped it”). The clip is a Chespirito scene where don Ramón insults doña Florinda, then catches himself with se me chispotió — the canonical use.
