What does “feutré” / “ambiance feutrée” mean in French?

Feutré describes an atmosphere that is hushed, soft and cushioned — the quiet, cocooning calm of an upscale hotel, lounge or restaurant. Ambiance feutrée is the go-to phrase reviewers and copywriters use for understated luxury: warm, muffled, intimate. It also covers muffled movement and lowered voices — pas feutrés, “muffled footsteps.”

The word comes from feutre, “felt” — the dense pressed wool that dampens sound. Just as felt deadens noise, a lieu feutré soaks up the bustle into a soft hush. The connotation is bourgeois comfort and refinement, which is why it clings to descriptions of boutique hotels, jazz bars and, here, a luxury sailing ship. A handy companion to chic or cossu when you want to evoke quiet, expensive calm.
