What are Ukrainian “vechornytsi”?
Вечорниці (vechornytsi) comes from вечір (“evening”) and names the Ukrainian tradition of gathering after sunset to sing, eat, dance, share gossip and (historically) match-make. The custom was central to village life across Ukraine from at least the 1700s, with regional variations: Carpathian vechornytsi leaned into mountain ballads and trembita horn music, while Poltava and Kyiv-region versions centred on embroidered shirts and ritual courtship songs.
In this Accord-Tour visit to Zakarpattia, vechornytsi at restaurant Kredens means a tasting board of pikytsia (smoked sausage), solomyna and shchoy, plus a folk number sung by the staff. The whole format is a deliberate revival; Ukrainian tourism boards now market modern vechornytsi as a way for diaspora visitors to meet regional food and song.
