Why is Tsereteli’s “Peter the Great” statue so famous in Moscow?
Standing on a small island in the Moskva River, the памятник Петру Первому (“Monument to Peter the Great”) is one of Moscow’s most-photographed and most-mocked landmarks. Designed by Georgian-Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli and unveiled in 1997, the statue stands about 98 meters tall and weighs over 1,000 tons. It marks the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy. International critics have repeatedly named it among the world’s ugliest monuments, citing its scale, awkward proportions, and odd placement. Locals love and roast it in equal measure.
