Why do Romanians call work “serviciu” instead of using a Latin-style word?

Romanians say “merg la serviciu” (“I’m going to work”) where Italians would say “vado al lavoro”, Spaniards “voy al trabajo”, and Poles “idę do pracy”. The Romanian word serviciu (“service”) covers both “the workplace / the office” and “the job itself.” Romanian inherited the Latin root servitium, but spun the meaning into “the place where you serve / spend your working hours,” distinct from the labor-flavored Romance siblings.
