💡 Víš, že…?

What does “jalal khalegh” mean in Persian?

جل الخالق (jall-al-khāleq)
interjection · Persian
“good heavens! well I never! (astonishment)”

In this comedy sketch, a dad orders a Chinese humanoid robot online and keeps mixing it up with his daughter. Marveling at it, he blurts: «جل الخالق، چین عجب چیزایی می‌سازه» (“good heavens, the things China makes these days!”). جل الخالق (jall-al-khāleq) is an exclamation of pure astonishment, literally “glorified be the Creator.”

Borrowed from Arabic, it’s what an older Iranian says when something boggles the mind, a gadget, a coincidence, an outrage. It sits beside other wonder-words like وای (“wow”) and عجب (“what a…”). Slightly old-fashioned, and all the funnier for it in a sketch about runaway technology.

Kde to uslyšíš
  • Iranian sketch comedy and family sitcoms on Instagram and Telegram.
  • From older relatives reacting to anything baffling.
  • In Persian reactions to new tech and gadgets.
  • Alongside وای and عجب in everyday Persian surprise.
