What does “waar” mean in Dutch questions with prepositions?
In Dutch you’d expect wat for “what” — and Wat eet hij? (“What is he eating?”) is fine. But the moment the verb carries a fixed preposition, wat is banned: you switch to waar and push the preposition to the end. Houden van (“to like”) gives Waar houdt ze van?, not “Wat houdt ze van?” So whenever a verb glues itself to a preposition, your question word becomes waar.
The same move covers a whole family: praten over → Waar praat hij over?, kijken naar → Waar kijkt hij naar?, luisteren naar → Waar luistert de vrouw naar? The split form (waar … van) is the everyday spoken one; you can also fuse it into a single word — Waarvan houdt ze? — which sounds more formal. One quirk to memorise: met becomes mee, so “with what?” is Waar … mee? or Waarmee?
