What does “Chunks” mean in German?
Real German speakers reach for whole little phrases they already know — blocks like “ich hab keine Ahnung” (no idea), “mal schauen” (we’ll see), or “geht klar” (sure, no problem). Language teachers call these ready-made units Chunks — a borrowed English term from language learning, not everyday German: you say them as one piece, not word by word. The payoff is speed — the more of these blocks you carry, the less your brain pauses mid-sentence to build.
Spoken line: “Wir sprechen in kleinen Bausteinen, in sogenannten Chunks.” — We speak in small building blocks, in so-called chunks. A chunk is a short phrase you’ve heard so often you say it as one unit, without building it piece by piece. Examples from the clip: “ich hab keine Ahnung” (I have no idea), “mal schauen” (let’s see / we’ll see), “geht klar” (sure, no problem / that works). Notice “Chunks” keeps its English shape here — German speakers borrowed the word for learning and teaching, said the English way (“tschanks”). In everyday German you’d more often hear “Bausteine” (building blocks) or “feste Ausdrücke” (fixed expressions) for the same idea.
