What does the “-t” ending mean in Hungarian?
In Hungarian you don’t rely on word order to show what gets acted on — you glue a -t onto it. Kávé is “coffee”; kávét is “coffee” as the thing you order or drink. Tea becomes teát, szendvics becomes szendvicset. English and Spanish have no equivalent: “coffee” looks the same whether you drink it or it spills on you. That little -t is Hungarian’s accusative, the signature mark of the direct object.
After a vowel the ending is just a bare -t (kávé → kávét, tea → teát). After many consonants you slip in a linking vowel chosen by vowel harmony, so szendvics becomes szendvicset, not “szendvicst.” The payoff comes when you stop drilling the bare forms and learn whole phrases instead: kérek egy teát (“I’ll have a tea”), szendvicset ebédelek (“I’m having a sandwich for lunch”). There the -t finally has a job — it tells you what’s being ordered, drunk, or eaten.
