What does “smorta” mean in Italian?

One letter saves your life here. Smorta means pale, wan, washed-out — a face drained of its healthy colour by illness, fright, or shock. It’s a hair away from morta, “dead,” so a speaker who feels rough might joke that she looks smorta, non morta — “wan, not deceased, thankfully.” Knowing the gap lets you describe looking unwell without accidentally announcing your own demise.

Smorta (masc. smorto) ties to the verb smorire, “to lose colour,” and the prefix s- signalling loss. It stretches beyond faces to dull, faded colours: un azzurro smorto is a washed-out blue, labbra smorte are pale lips. A close cousin is smunto, “gaunt and drawn.” Reach for smorta whenever someone looks peaky — the textbook word pallido works too, but smorta carries that extra note of sickly dullness.
