What does “soprammobile” mean in Italian?
English needs “ornament,” “knick-knack” or “trinket.” Italian just says where the thing lives: soprammobile, from sopra (“on top of”) plus mobile (“piece of furniture”). It’s the little statue, the porcelain figure, the crystal animal that sits on a shelf doing nothing but being looked at — which makes it the exact word for most of the souvenirs people bring home from a trip.
Careful with mobile: as a noun it’s a piece of furniture, not a phone (that’s il cellulare), and i mobili is the furniture of a whole room. The doubled m is regular for compounds in sopra-, as in soprattutto. In the clip the souvenir haul is named piece by piece — “ho comprato una statuina, un soprammobile”, the Manneken Pis from Brussels — alongside fridge calamite and a duty-free perfume bought purely for nostalgia.
