Why are Italian athletes called “Azzurri”?

Italy’s flag is green, white and red — so why are its athletes gli Azzurri, “the Blues”? Because the national jersey is azzurro, a specific royal blue. Azzurro is its own colour word in Italian, the medium sky-blue sitting between pale celeste and deep blu, and it is the colour Italians reach for to mean “the national team.” Calling a footballer un azzurro simply means he plays for Italy.

The blue is azzurro Savoia, the colour of the House of Savoy, the dynasty that ruled a unified Italy from 1861 to 1946; the football team first wore it in 1911 against Hungary, and the tradition outlived the monarchy. Note that Italian splits a single English “blue” across several words — celeste (light), azzurro (mid/sky), blu (dark) — a classic learner trap. The noun form un azzurro / gli azzurri now stands for the players themselves.
