What does “trilocale” mean in Italian?

Italian flats are sized by counting locali (rooms), not bedrooms. Trilocale means three rooms — and the catch is that the living room counts as one. So a trilocale has a living room plus two bedrooms, which an English speaker would call a two-bedroom. The pattern scales: bilocale is two rooms (one bedroom), monolocale is a studio. Read the prefix and you instantly know the size.

Locale comes from Latin locus (“place”), and in property-speak it means a room — the living room and bedrooms count, but kitchen and bathrooms usually don’t.
