What is Ferragosto and why is it celebrated in Italy?

Ferragosto
Italian cultural calendar word
Aug 15 peak-summer holiday; name = Latin Feriae Augusti, “Augustus’s rest days”

Ferragosto is the August 15 holiday that marks the high point of the Italian summer — the week cities empty out, shops shut per ferie, and everyone heads to the sea or the mountains for a gita fuori porta. The name hides its age: it comes straight from the Latin Feriae Augusti, the “rest days of Augustus,” a break the emperor decreed in 18 BCE after the summer harvest. Two thousand years on, Italy still downs tools.

Over the centuries the date absorbed a religious layer: August 15 is also the Catholic Assunzione di Maria (Assumption of Mary), with processions in many towns. So Ferragosto runs on two tracks at once — an ancient pagan holiday of rest and a Marian feast — finished off with grigliate, big lunches, and seaside fireworks. If a sign says chiuso per ferie in mid-August, Ferragosto is why.
