What does “la fina venko” mean in Esperanto?

Announcing her new Patreon page, this creator signs off with a line straight out of Esperanto’s founding rhetoric: “Ĝis mia morto la fina venko okazos” — “Before I die, the final victory will happen.” La fina venko is the movement’s own name for its hoped-for ultimate goal: the worldwide adoption of Esperanto as a shared international second language — not literally every person on Earth, but Esperanto genuinely established alongside people’s native tongues.

Believers in this goal are sometimes called finvenkistoj. The phrase dates back to Zamenhof himself, though it isn’t universally loved even within the movement — some Esperantists have pushed to replace it with fina sukceso (“final success”), since venko (“victory”) echoes the language of war more than they’d like for a project about peace.
