What does 'الهبّة' mean in Levantine Arabic?
الهبّة (al-hibba) is Levantine Arabic for the rush, the wave, the trend. The root هبّ (habba) means to blow (as in wind), so a هبّة is a gust everyone gets caught in: a fashion sweeping Damascus, a wave of emigration, a sudden mass-buy. Speakers reach for it when something flips from individual choice to collective movement.
This clip stages الهبّة at its most painful. A Syrian businessman explains how young employees were forced to choose: stay and go to the front (الجبهة), or leave the country. Most left: « فأغلب الشباب اللي كانوا يشتغلوا معنا [...] بس يخلصوا دراسة بيسافروا » (most of the young men who worked with us, the moment they finished studying, they emigrated). « نسميها الهبّة » (we called it the al-hibba).
