What does “khaff damak” mean in Arabic?

خف دمك (khaff damak), literally “your blood is light,” is an Arabic compliment for someone who is funny, charming, or easy company. The opposite, ثقيل دم (thaqeel dam, “heavy blood”), means dull or annoying. The metaphor pictures personality as something flowing through the veins, light or heavy, refreshing or sluggish.

The phrase is used across Gulf, Levantine, and Egyptian Arabic with small wording variations. Calling someone خف دمك is a real compliment in Arabic conversation. Calling them ثقيل دم is a real warning. The blood-and-clay metaphors give Arabic a vocabulary for personality types that English doesn’t have a clean equivalent for.
