What is “kunya” in Arabic?

Across the Arab world, many people are addressed by a kunya (كنية): an honorary name made of Abu (“father of”) or Umm (“mother of”) plus a child’s name. Abu Jaleel literally means “father of Jaleel.” Once a man has a son, Abu + son’s name often replaces his given name in everyday address, and the same applies to Umm for mothers.
