What does “apachurrar” mean in Mexican Spanish?

When the crowd surges, people get apachurrados — squashed, crushed in the crush. Apachurrar is the very Mexican verb for flattening something by pressing hard: a crumpled can, a stepped-on bug, bodies packed in a stampede. The lovely twist is its softer side — apachurrar is also to hug someone so tightly you nearly squeeze the air out, the Mexican bear-hug sense.

It traces to Nahuatl patzoa (“to crush/bruise”), reshaped through despachurrar; the -uch-/-urr- texture makes it sound like the squashing it describes. Context decides the tone: me apachurraron en el metro is no fun, but ven, te apachurro is affection. Either way it’s everyday Mexican, rarely heard in Spain.
