What does “kappal” mean in Tamil?

கப்பல் (kappal) is the standard Tamil word for ship (the seafaring kind). Tamil-speaking Gen Z then borrowed the English fan-culture verb to ship and remapped it onto the literal noun, so calling two friends oru kappal now means I ship them as a couple. The same English-loan-to-existing-word substitution shows up across South Indian languages: Telugu jodi, Kannada pair, Malayalam kettu.
