What is a “hanbang byeongwon” in Korea?
한방 병원 (hanbang byeongwon) is a Korean traditional-medicine hospital, an institution unique to South Korea that runs full hospital infrastructure around 한의학 (han-uihak), traditional Korean medicine. Doctors trained as 한의사 (han-uisa) practice acupuncture, herbal-medicine prescription, 추나 (chuna) manipulation, and 부항 (buhang) cupping, with X-rays, MRIs, and inpatient beds attached. National health insurance covers many treatments, and back pain, whiplash, and post-accident recovery are common reasons people choose a hanbang hospital over a regular orthopedic clinic. Major chains like 자생 한방병원 (Jaseng) and 경희의료원 (Kyung Hee) have campuses in Seoul and most provincial capitals.
In this clip, a Korean creator realizes the rude taxi driver injured the head doctor of a Jaseng hanbang hospital: “자생 한방 병원 원장.”
