What does “يا لذيذ” mean in Egyptian Arabic?

Egyptians do affection out loud. يا لذيذ (ya lazeez) literally means 'oh delicious one,' and it lands somewhere between 'honey,' 'darling,' and 'sweetheart' in English. A husband can call his wife يا لذيذ, a mother can call her son يا لذيذ, and the word لذيذ on its own usually describes food. With يا in front of it, it points at a person instead.

In this clip, يا لذيذ opens a soft pushback. She’s been complimented and deflects: « لا يا لذيذ، بس انا ست بيت فاشلة » (no my sweet, I’m a hopeless housewife). The word does the warming. Without it the line sounds curt; with it she stays inside the flirting she’s politely declining.
