What is “pikkujoulu” in Finnish workplace culture?
Pikkujoulu, literally “little Christmas,” is the Finnish workplace pre-Christmas party, held any time from early November through mid-December. Companies, departments, and friend groups all hold their own pikkujoulu, complete with a buffet, drinking, and the optional sauna. The tradition is so embedded that pikkujoulu season is its own period in the Finnish calendar, often more intense socially than actual Christmas.
This clip is a stand-up bit performed at the pikkujoulu of a small-town Iisalmi beauty-care firm, where the comedian gently roasts the company for being from Iisalmi and for handling accounting work alongside beauty services. The joke depends on Finnish workplace and small-town cultural knowledge.
