What does “uyire” mean in Tamil?
Tamil family-drama dialogue and song lyrics lean heavily on the word உயிர் (uyir), which means “life,” “soul,” or “breath.” Calling someone உயிரே (uyire) is one of the strongest declarations Tamil offers: you are not just loved, you are my breath itself. The formula “நீங்க ரெண்டு பேரு தாண்டி எனக்கு உயிரே” (“apart from you two, you are my life”) puts loved ones equal to the speaker’s own breath. The phrasing has run through Tamil cinema since MGR films of the 1960s and powers everything from lullabies to A.R. Rahman lyrics.
This clip is a tender family-argument scene. A father is asked who he loves more, his son or his daughter. He answers with the uyire formula, naming both as life itself.
