What does “-da” mean in Tamil at the end of a sentence?

Tamil tacks -டா (-ḍā) onto the end of a sentence to mark informal male-to-male speech. கேக்க மாட்றடா (“you won’t listen, dude”), வாடா (“come on, bro”), போடா (“go away, mate”). It carries something English handles with “bro,” “dude,” or “mate,” wrapped tighter into the verb itself.

The female counterpart is -டி (-ḍī) for female-to-female speech: கேக்க மாட்றடி, வாடி. Older Tamil speakers can find both rough and avoid using them with strangers; younger speakers use them freely with friends.
