What is “bakhur” in Arabian and Yemeni culture?
البخور (al-bakhūr) is the perfumed incense at the heart of Yemeni and Gulf hospitality. The base is oud, agarwood resin from infected aquilaria trees, blended with rose oil, ambergris, sandalwood, and saffron, then shaped into chips or paste. Hosts place a few pieces on hot charcoal in a small mabkhara burner and pass it around so guests can perfume their hair, beards, and clothing in the smoke before they leave. The custom turns a visit into a fragrant ritual, and the smell sticks to fabric for days. Family recipes for bakhur blends are guarded the way Italian families guard tomato-sauce recipes.
In this clip, a Yemeni woman jokes with her sister-in-law about needing the bakhur before a wedding: “جيت ادور فحم اول لعبة هلبخور.”
