What are “daba,” “baghi,” and “shhal” in Moroccan Arabic?

دابا (daba) is the Moroccan Darija word for “now,” and it’s one of the fastest tells that you’re listening to Moroccan Arabic. Modern Standard Arabic uses al-ān, Levantine uses halla', Iraqi uses hassa', and Egyptian uses dilwa’ti. Daba is purely Moroccan.

The reel uses دابا constantly, alongside other staple Moroccan words like باغي (baghi, “I want”) and شحال (shhal, “how much”). These aren’t slang. They’re the everyday vocabulary that diverged from MSA over centuries. Any Moroccan content without daba is rare, and any learner without daba will struggle to follow what’s being said.
