Ultimul fluier pentru Mircea Lucescu

What does “nea” mean in Romanian?
As Romania bids farewell to football great Mircea Lucescu, the tribute lands on the name the whole country uses for him: «nea Mircea, îți mulțumim» (“nea Mircea, we thank you”). Nea is an affectionate, respectful title for an older man, roughly “old man” or “uncle” placed before his first name.
It’s warm and folksy, the way you’d address a beloved neighbour or elder, nea Ion, nea Gheorghe, somewhere between deference and family. Calling the legendary coach “nea Mircea” rather than Mister Lucescu makes him everyone’s uncle. The Italians nicknamed him Il Luce; Romania just calls him nea Mircea.
