what does “ch’ti” mean and where does the word come from?
A “ch’ti” is a person from France’s northern Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, and the word doubles as the name of their Picard dialect. The popular explanation is that the nickname was coined by WWI soldiers from elsewhere in France, struck by how their northern comrades pronounced toi and moi — turning “c’est toi, c’est moi” into something like “ch’est ti, ch’est mi.” That recurring “ch” sound stuck, and the men became les Ch’tis. Today it’s worn with pride.
Linguists note the WWI dating is broad and the exact trigger debated — some frame it simply as the heavy /ʃ/ (ch-) sound peppering Picard speech rather than one tidy phrase. Either way the label, once a tease, became an identity. It went global in 2008 with “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis,” Dany Boon’s comedy about a southerner dreading a transfer north; with over 20 million tickets sold it’s the most-watched French-made film ever. (And no — despite a stubborn folk myth, ch’ti never meant “small” or “puny.”)
