What does “ficar com” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?
In Brazilian Portuguese, ficar com alguém means to hook up with or be casually involved with someone — kissing, making out, seeing each other with no commitment. It’s the crucial step before namorar (“to date exclusively”). So eles ficaram means they hooked up, while eles estão namorando means they’re officially a couple. Many Brazilian relationships start by “ficando” before anyone is anyone’s boyfriend or girlfriend.
The verb ficar literally means “to stay/remain,” and this romantic sense is a colloquial Brazilian extension. You’ll often hear it bare, without com: toda mulher que você fica (“every woman you hook up with”), você pegaria? turning into você ficaria com ela?. That’s exactly the trap here: the narrator is namorando a girlfriend he loves, and she keeps escalating — Você acha Camila Pitanga bonita? … Você ficaria com a Camila Pitanga? — until his honest Ficaria lets her spring the punchline: então eu estou te atrapalhando a ficar com a Camila Pitanga (“so I’m getting in the way of you hooking up with her”). The whole jealous interrogation hinges on the gap between ficar (casual) and namorar (committed).
