What is “fàntuán”?

In Taiwan, 饭团 (fàntuán) is one of the great breakfast institutions: a tightly-rolled rice ball stuffed with pork floss, pickled radish, and a fried dough stick (油条), wrapped in seaweed and bought from a streetside stall before work. Most Taiwanese mornings start with a fantuan choice and a soy-milk decision, both made fast at a pre-dawn stall.

This clip’s hypothetical, “if you could live life over, would you sell rice balls?”, only lands because fantuan vendors are part of the Taiwanese self-image. They show up before sunrise, work hard, and form a small but admired layer of the local economy. Romanticizing the fantuan stall is the Taiwanese version of “running a coffee shop somewhere quiet.”
