What does “arepa” mean in Spanish?

An arepa is a flat, round cake made from ground maize, split and stuffed or eaten plain — a daily staple in Venezuela and Colombia. The fun for a learner is phonetic: say it slowly and “arepa” starts to echo “arrepentir,” to regret. A child here is told to repeat “arepa, arepa, arepa,” then quips that he thought he was going to “arrepentir” instead. Same opening syllables, completely different word.

“Arrepentirse de algo” means to regret or repent something: “me arrepiento de no haber estudiado” (I regret not studying). The reflexive verb shares its first sounds with “arepa” but nothing else, which is exactly why the pun lands.
