What does “checar” mean in Mexican Spanish?

Checar is the everyday Mexican verb for “to check.” It comes straight from English “check,” but Mexicans treat it as a normal Spanish verb: checo, checas, checa. So chécate la vista means “check out the view,” and voy a checar means “I’ll go check.” In Spain and much of South America people say comprobar or revisar instead, but in Mexico checar is everywhere.

In the clip the skater points at the sea and says chécate nada más la vista — “just check out the view.” That nada más means “just / only,” softening it to a casual “have a quick look.” You’ll also hear checar la hora (check the time), checar el celular (check your phone), and at work checar tarjeta (to clock in).
