What does “tianguis” mean in Mexican Spanish?
Tianguis is the everyday Mexican Spanish word for an open-air neighbourhood market — the kind that sets up on a fixed day, takes over a few streets, and sells everything from fresh fish to kitchen supplies. It comes straight from Nahuatl tianquiztli, meaning “open-air market,” and has been used in Mexico without interruption since long before the Spanish arrived. No textbook mercado required — in Mexico, tianguis is what locals actually say.
The word traces back to Classical Nahuatl tiyānquiztli, from tiyāmiqui, “to trade or sell.” Spanish adopted it wholesale and it stuck — one of hundreds of Nahuatl borrowings still alive in everyday Mexican Spanish. In the clip, the narrator opens by saying the richest food in Mexico is found at tianguis, then gives the specific one: “el tianguis entre calles Lago Cuitzeo y Laguna del Carmen.” That double appearance — as a general claim and a precise address — shows exactly how naturally the word slots into conversation.
