Why do Mexicans call office workers “Godínez”?

“Godínez” is an ordinary Spanish surname that, in Mexico, became affectionate slang for a salaried office worker: the nine-to-five cubicle employee with a packed lunch and a long commute. The origin is debated, but the most popular story traces it to a schoolboy named Godínez — the quiet, easily distracted back-row student in Profesor Jirafales' little classroom on the beloved sitcom “El Chavo del 8.” From a kid in class to the everyday office drone, the name stuck.

Here the name lands in its original setting: a pupil greets the teacher — “Buenos días, querido profesor” — hands over an apple, then asks straight out, “¿Me va a poner buena calificación?” The reply: “eso depende de lo que hayas estudiado.” That apple-for-a-grade move is pure classroom-Godínez. The office meaning is folk etymology, though: sources note the slang’s true origin is uncertain, with rival theories pointing to the 1960s telenovela “Gutierritos” (a put-upon clerk) and a Mexican-dub character in “The Simpsons.”
