How do you answer roll call in French?

A teacher takes attendance and trips over a pupil’s name, but the ritual itself is the lesson: «On lève la main et on dit présent» (“you raise your hand and say 'present'”). At French roll call, l’appel, each student answers présent (or présente, if you’re a girl) when their name is called.

The gendered pair is the catch: a boy says présent, a girl présente, even though they sound almost identical. The sketch’s comedy, a teacher mangling “Feyella,” is its own everyday French verb, écorcher un prénom (“to butcher a name”). But présent(e) is the first word every pupil learns to say out loud in class.
