What does “il ne fallait pas” mean in French?

Arrive at a French home with flowers or a bottle and you will very likely hear il ne fallait pas — “you shouldn’t have.” It is not a complaint. It is the opening move of a small ritual: the receiver protests the trouble taken, the giver waves it away with ça me fait plaisir (“it’s my pleasure”), and the gift is accepted without anyone dwelling on it.

Variants scale with formality: mais il ne fallait pas !, the clipped fallait pas, tu es fou ! between friends, and vous n’auriez pas dû at the polite end. Grammatically it is the impersonal il faut in the imperfect, so it reads literally as “it was not necessary.” Going straight to merci without the protest is not rude, just noticeably brisk.
