What is “Vorkuta”?
Воркута (Vorkuta) is a Russian city above the Arctic Circle, in the Komi Republic on the edge of the Pechora coal basin. Founded in the 1930s as a Soviet labor camp around coal mining, the city peaked around 117,000 residents in the late 1980s and has since dropped to under 50,000. Winters dip below -40°C, the polar night runs for weeks, and many of the surrounding mining settlements have been abandoned, their apartment blocks left to the snow. Vorkuta has become Russian shorthand for “the harsh north.”
In this clip, a Russian YouTuber stands in Vorkuta on June 18 and warns viewers: “крайне не рекомендую” (“I strongly do not recommend”) moving here.
