What does “впадать в ступор” mean in Russian?

When both rear wheels drop into a pit, the speaker says, most drivers впадают в ступор — they freeze up and just keep pressing the accelerator uselessly. The verb phrase literally means “to fall into a stupor,” borrowed from Latin stupor (“numbness”), but in everyday Russian it has nothing clinical about it: any stressful situation — a tough exam question, a surprise at work, an unexpected argument — can make you впасть в ступор.

The construction pairs впадать / впасть (“to fall into”) with the noun ступор. Use the imperfective впадать for a habitual pattern (“he always freezes up”) and the perfective впасть for a single event (“she froze”). Because ступор came into Russian through medical Latin, it carries just enough formality to sound precise rather than slangy, which is why you’ll hear it in news commentary, office talk, and everyday storytelling alike.
