What does “merge” mean in Romanian?

The verb a merge literally means “to go” or “to walk,” but Romanians use it constantly to mean “it works,” “it’s fine,” or “that’ll do.” Ask if the wifi is back and you’ll hear merge. Ask if a plan suits everyone — merge. It’s one short word that answers “is this okay?” with a relaxed yes, which is why people chant it when something finally clicks into place.

Stretch it and the meaning sharpens: merge alone is “yep, works”; merge bine is “going well”; merge? with a rising tone is “that okay with you?”; and nu prea merge softens a no into “not really working.” It even pairs things — vinul merge cu brânza, “the wine goes with the cheese.” Etymologically it comes from Latin mergere, “to plunge, dip” — the same Latin verb behind English “merge” — but in Romanian (and Balkan Eastern Romance more broadly) that “sinking” sense was reshaped into everyday “going” and “working.”
