What do “posso?” and “pode” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?

In Brazilian Portuguese, asking permission can be one word: Posso? (“May I?”). The answer is its mirror image: Pode (“You may / go ahead”). Both come from the verb poder (“to be able to”) — you just say posso for “I” and pode for “you.” So a whole exchange about whether you’re allowed to do something can run on those two forms alone, no extra words needed.

Poder is irregular, which is exactly why this pair is worth memorising as a set rather than deriving each time: eu posso, você/ele/ela pode. The clip is a flirty back-and-forth — Amor, eu posso? — Pode. E essa geladeira eu posso? — Pode. — that rides the rhythm of the question-and-answer. You’ll use the same minimal pair everywhere: Posso entrar? (“May I come in?”), Posso pagar com cartão? (“Can I pay by card?”), all answered with a simple Pode or Pode sim (“yes, you may”).
