What does “tchan” mean in Brazilian Portuguese slang?

Tchan names the spark that makes something stand out — the highlight, the extra flair, the “wow” factor. Teachers explaining story structure call both the central conflict and the climax “o tchan da história,” literally the story’s tchan: the moment everything gets interesting. The word imitates a dramatic musical sting, like a stab of orchestra brass, and carries that same drama into everyday speech.

The word took off nationally in the 1990s through the Bahian axé group É o Tchan, whose songs used it as a playful, flirtatious stand-in for someone’s appeal — ela tem um tchan, “she’s got that something.” Outside music and romance it just means the standout element of anything: a recipe’s tchan is its secret ingredient, a party’s tchan is whatever made people talk about it afterward.
