Does “vriend” mean friend or boyfriend in Dutch?

In this street prank, a man offers a flower and pops the real question: «Heb je een vriend?» (“do you have a boyfriend?”). The trap for learners: vriend means both “friend” and “boyfriend.”

Context and the little words decide. “Een vriend” is usually just a (male) friend, but “mijn vriend” (my vriend) almost always means “my boyfriend”, and the same goes for vriendin (a female friend, or “my girlfriend”). To be clear about plain friendship, Dutch often says “een vriend van mij” (a friend of mine). A tiny word that can accidentally confess a relationship.
