What is the Dutch “Sinterklaasintocht”?

The Sinterklaasintocht is the annual mid-November ceremony where Sinterklaas arrives in the Netherlands by pakjesboot (his steamboat from Spain). The national Intocht is broadcast live by NTR, rotates each year through a different Dutch town, and is the kickoff for the multi-week build-up to pakjesavond (December 5). After the national broadcast, dozens of gemeenten run their own local intochten on the following weekends, with thousands of kids lining harbors and town squares. The ceremony is the symbolic anchor of Sinterklaasjournaal (NPO Zapp’s nightly Sinterklaas-chronicle that runs through November).
